'Vulcano'
is an Italian island which has given its name to all
other volcanoes. In AD79 Mount Vesuvius in Italy erupted, burying the Roman city of Pompeii. The largest known eruption was in Tambora, Indonesia in 1815. The volcano threw out about 150 cubic km of matter and lost 1250m in height. Mauna Loa is the world's largest volcano. It is 4170m above sea-level and 5180m below sea-level. |
